AMD or Intel in 2018 for hard core gaming?

I want to buy someone I care a lot about a new computer system, but they know more about it than me and I don't want to buy the wrong thing or ask them for help.

Go with AMD thread ripper thing or stick to Intel like I always have?
Any recommendations?

Is 8gb ram enough, and should I go with ssd for gaming?

AMD seems to be killing it for some reason, I don't like them that much. People probably compare price / performance and go with AMD. I probably would still prefer Intel myself.
