    Beyond Black

    Beyond Black

In 2035 a new Cold War began to emerge. With the United States' economy virtually in ruins, Russia, North Korea and China became the most prominent superpowers, and with this a new age dawned.

It started with North Korean; after the death of Kim Jong Il in 2021 a short tussle amongst the high military ranks resulted in one of Il's generals taking the seat as president. The moment he was in power he thickened the veil of secrecy that Il had upheld over North Korea and began expanded the already massive North Korean military machine. The UN attempted at several times to hold diplomatic talks with the North Korean leaders but were declined on each and every occasion. It was only 7 years later that the real trouble began.

North Korea's armies decimated the UN troops that held the heavily fortified DMZ and marched onwards into South Korea and within 36 hours Seoul was under their control.
This show of strength enraged the United Nations but not a single individual nation would speak up or act. News of the invasion had barely spread by the time the South Korean capital was taken and the brute force and surgical precision with which the North Koreans had acted intimidated the other countries into silence. The war became known as the '36 Hour War'.

2029; a year since the fall of the South and the unification of the Korean peninsula under a single flag; the North Korean flag. The North and South simply became Korea and a year of peace followed, but the Koreans kept out of the eyes of the other powers, its veil of secrecy as thick as ever. The year of inaction had given the world time to calm down and all but return to normal.

By the middle of 2035 Russia had increased its military capacity tenfold. China had increased its own forces by a massive amount. The dying months of 2035 would see Russian troops take Mongolia and expand into Eastern Europe. The now defunct UN consisted of only several countries, mostly neutral countries along with a few key players:

-The United States of America's economy was crumbling and the US dollar had come to be worth a mere pittance overseas, their military power was still respectable but paled in comparison to the other powers.
-The United Kingdom was brought under the British flag during the early 2020's during the end of Kim Jong Il's reign in North Korea and their economy was stable, their military strong but defence oriented.
-Australia withdrew from overseas warfare in 2013, the same year they threw aside their non-nuclear treaty and began a nuclear weapons program. Australia's economy boomed through these years but stabilised as they began to expand their own military.

    Due to its lack of power the UN stayed quite over Russia's expansion and even remained so when China began to expand its own borders, merging with Japan through diplomacy and other neighbouring nations by force. The Chinese and their conglomerate nations now stand under the banner;

By 2040 all hostilities seemed to have stopped, Korea had taken a large part of the Pacific theatre with the rest being occupied by the Chinese. New Zealand and Papua New Guinea came under Australia's flag in hopes of greater safety, now going under the title of The Pacific Union.

[See the world map below for complete picture of the expansion of countries.]

    Major Factions:
As the world stands there are 7 major powers entangled in this struggle, including the neutral countries:

    • The Russian Federation
    • The Republic of China
    • Korea
    • The United Kingdom
    • The Pacific Union
    • The American Alliance
    • Neutral Countries.
The colours in the above list are tied to the world map in that they are the colours that represent their territories within it.

    Faction Alliances:
The three superpowers; The Russian Federation, The Republic of China and Korea hold no treaties with any other nation.
The United Kingdom, The Pacific Union and The American Alliance all hold a fragile treaty with each other.

    World Map:

Beyond Black takes place in the year 2041, beginning on the 23rd of September. Laser weaponry is there but not commonplace amongst the ranks of infantry, it tends to be reserved for defensive purposes.
The standard infantryman would usually have a projectile weapon. Key pieces of weaponry in use are as follows:

    Infantry Weapons:
    Tactical Strike Rifle 1: The TSR1 is a sniper rifle that fires standard rifle rounds and can fire two other ordnances;
--High velocity slugs; can easily pierce all forms of body armour and most light vehicle armour.
--Explosive Ordnance Rounds; large calibre rounds that will explode half a second after impact.
The TSR1 has a 10 round clip and is held in the highest regard by snipers, and in the deepest fears of other infantry for its one shot; one kill reputation.

    Mark III standard infantry rifle:
The M3r is a rifle that fires 7.76mm rounds with armour piercing capabilities and incredible accuracy. It has a 50 rounds clip as standard and can empty it in 7 seconds.

Universal Service Handgun: The USH is a low calibre handgun with high accuracy and rate of fire, it has 18 round clip.

Incendiary Scatter Rifle: The ISR is the standard flechette rifle (effectively a shotgun). These powerful close combat weapons fire superheated flechettes that burst into flames once their temperature falls below 1500 Kelvin (1227 Degrees Celsius), the ensuing fires can reach up to 1273 Kelvin (1000 Degrees Celsius). General statistics indicate that no soldier has ever survived an ISR induced injury which involved more than 3 of the 15 flechettes.
Their high temperature threshhold, however, means that the flechettes cannot travel far before igniting mid-air and becoming useless.

Heavy Squad Support Weapon: The HSSW is the grandchild of the SAW and can hold up to 200 medium calibre rounds and fires with with high accuracy for its size and rate of fire.

High Explosive Launcher: The HEL was born of the Javelin missile system. It can hold a single Scorpion2 missile capable of taking out almost any armoured target.

    Stationary Weapons:
Automated Weapon System: AWS units are heavily armoured, stationary machine-gun nests equipped with dual gattling cannons. Their accuracy and AI are exceptional but has been known to have trouble differentiating friend from foe.
The AWS is capable of anti-aircraft defence.

Advanced Lasweapon System:ALS systems are the big brother of the AWS, instead of gattling cannons that are equipped with the latest laser weaponry, capable of firing a constant beam of energy a distance of 1000m for 20 seconds before a 20 second cool-down is required. The laser are capable of cutting through flesh with ease and can cut through standard vehicle armour with some difficulty. However more modern armour is able to deflect and absorb these beams while receiving minimal damage.
The ALS is capable of anti-aircraft defence.

Missile Defence Systems: there are several missile defence systems in the Beyond Black world, the standard MDS is essentially an ALS with much more precise aiming and a beam that is concentrated tenfold and allows for bursts of only 1 seconds before requiring a cool-down period of almost 30 seconds.

Offensive Missile Weaponry: throughout the Beyond Black universe missiles are used in several shapes and forms:
    --Scorpion2: small anti-vehicular missile, fired from a hand-held launcher.
--Retaliator Missile: the Retaliator is a missile design for specifically its namesake; retaliating. Its purpose is to deliver medium level damage over large areas such as cities or military installations. Fired from stationary launch facilities.
--Echelon Warhead Deliverance Platform: The EWDP is a large missile that acts as the carrier for nuclear ordnances, it is designed to carry them into orbit and direct them to their target from there. Its casing is resistant to the lasers used in most missile defence systems, however once the nuclear ordnance has been release it is extremely vulnerable.

    Standard Infantry Armour:
Infantry armour comes in a three main sub-areas, not including complete exoskeletons (see "Infantry Exoskeletons"), all of these feature automatic painkiller administration. They are as follows:
Basic Infantry Suit: the BIS is the armoured uniform given to standard infantry within the armies of all the military powers. They are made of a Kevlar hybrid that allows for maximum mobility whilst providing satisfactory protection from projectile rounds.
The BIS incorporates plates of ceramic infused with nanotechnology that are used to cover vital organs and will repel all but high calibre and lasweapon attacks.
Advanced Infantry Suit: higher elements of the military are given access to the AIS, an upgraded version of the BIS which incorporates a heavier density armour in the materal and also has armour plates covering the entire front of the torso, thighs, shoulders and spine. The major advantage of the AIS is the helmet system which gives the soldier battlefield information along with information on the ammuntion levels of their weapons and allows for use of nightvision and 3x zoom via the helmet's visor. The helmet also contains a camera that shows first person what is happening, these videos are fed directly back to the soldier's base and from their to a major centre. These are know as FVR (First Video Relay) systems. The helmet also allows for optional use of oxygen tanks.
Special Operations Suit: the acronym SOS is not taken lightly by the lesser soldiers; they genuinely fear encountering a soldier with an SOS unit. These top level suits incorporate nanotechnology throughout the entire suit to an extent and have exceptional defence capabilities against all but the highest calibre rounds and lasweapons. The strengthened nanotechnology infused ceramics in the SOS are nigh impregnable by infantry weapons and cover the upper torso and other vital organs of the soldier.
The SOS unit's helmet incorporates all the features of the AIS as well as thermal vision, 5x zoom and added battlefield information.
These units are only given to the most highly trained and skilled soldiers and are as such seen only rarely.
    Infantry Exoskeletons:
The first effective, reliable and ergonomic exoskeleton came into use by the Koreans shortly after their attack on the Russian intelligence satellite (See "Orbital Technology") due to their need to have soldiers who were armed, defended and have their own source of oxygen. These quickly evolved into land use.
However with the development of weaponry that could penetrate all forms of armour suitable for such exoskeletons advancing far faster than any research into advanced armour for the exoskeletons they soon fell to being researched as a defensive initiative. The arms race was moving far to quickly to be dwelling on such ventures.
Here is where the United Kingdom took charge in the field. With their main initiative being defence they saw this technology as a would be saviour and poured endless resources into it. By 2034 they had their first working prototype of what they dubbed "Hood II" after the famous World War II vessel; HMS Hood that was sunk in 1941. Hood II was only slightly larger than the average person (the initial Hood II, designed for a soldier of 6' stood at only 7') and had armour capable of absorbing even light lasweapon fire for a short duration. Its triumph was against projectile weaponry against which it could withstand almost any attack for a sustained time before its reactive armour weakened.
However, it had a major pitfall in movement. Hood II was slow moving and unable to preform complex movements at speed. The UK were happy with this however as it performed its task of defence to the highest order.
2037 saw the Hood II go into full production and by 2039 almost every country had their own variations. However no other nation managed to create armoured exoskeletons with the same strength armour as the Hood II without making it essentially stationary.
This left the United Kingdom with a substantial defensive advantage.

The standard exoskeleton can be fitted with additional weaponry or the user can simply use a standard infantry weapon.

In orbital warfare exoskeletons are in far more use as the lower gravity and air pressure allows for much better movement and speed. Those used in orbital warfare are essentially land exoskeletons with less armour that is more focussed on lasweapon repulsion and their main purpose is speed, strength and an individual oxygen system.

The vehicles in Beyond Black are more or less advanced versions of modern technology; tanks, APCs, helicopters, fighters, bombers, etc.
Things such as updated weaponry, computer systems have been added, for example a tank may have laser weapon rather than a machine-gun to accompany its main gun. And said weaponry may by operated by an AI controller.

    Orbital Technology:

The early 2020's saw a new space race emerge amongst the powers of the time. The US, Russians, Koreans and Chinese all began programs to be the first with space based surveillance and weaponry. Initially the US led the race but as their economy began to falter they fell behind and the Russians seemed to lead alone.
The Russians made the first breakthrough by setting up a relay of small 'branch' satellites that were linked back to a 'root' satellite, these allowed them to see any part of the globe in real time. This was 2029.
The Russian intelligence agencies benefited greatly from this and held a massive advantage over the other powers for all of two years before the Koreans reacted. They became frustrated with the Russians and decided to fight back, in order to distract the Russians they Koreans elaborately staged what looked, from all angles, to be the preparations of an attack on Russian soil.
The Kremlin went into overdrive, they had effectively hit the panic button and the Koreans took the opportunity and struck. In June 2031 the Koreans dramatically unveiled their newest technology for the first time; short-range space transport craft, or sr-STC. Its maiden voyage took a squad of 12 Korean special forces soldiers to the Russian root satellite. Its next-gen stealth equipment allowed it to dock before it was even noticed.
All 82 crew of the satellite were kill on live feed to the Kremlin before the squad used the manual override to start the emergency self destruct of the root station and leaving its branches to float in orbit and fall into disrepair.

This was a massive setback to the entire space race, the single greatest surveillance network ever constructed had been destroyed. The Russians turned their focus from the surveillance and put their energies into developing as space based weapon system.
By 2040 each of the three main powers had failed to create any worthy orbit-Earth weaponry. The Chinese however, managed to develop a breed of fighter aircraft that allowed it to break into orbit for a short time period. The first working prototype was used in a raid on a Korean satellite that the Chinese believed to be close to reaching its goal of creating an orbital weapon. The fighter was dubbed the Trifighter, due to its ability to launch attacks on ground, air and orbital targets. The Trifighter was put into production in 2039 and by 2040 both the Russians and the Koreans had their own Trifighter variants.

    The Trifighter:
The Trifighter is a new breed of fighter jet that was designed initially by the Chinese as a ground based means to attack orbital platforms but quickly turned into a versatile, all-round fighter/bomber. The Trifighter is piloted by one operator and, if the situation calls for it, can be flown by an AI operator, however the Trifighter pilot AI is flawed and is not often used.
The Chinese fitted their Trifighter with two main weapons:
    Lascannons: The Trifighter's lascannons were made to be effective against the orbital platforms, but then when the Trifighter became an all-purpose fighter they were modified to give three different modes of fire;
-Charged Beam: This mode fires a powerfully concentrated stream of laser at the target for a split second but has massive amounts of power, easily being capable of destroying a small building.
This mode of fire requires the lascannon to be fully charged and has a two minute cool-down period during which the lascannon is completely inoperable.
-Light Beam: This secondary beam mode is designed for effectiveness against lightly armoured targets, it fires a low concentration beam of energy for a sustained duration. The beam can be held for up to a minute before needing to recharge.
Unlike the Charged Beam mode of fire the Light Beam can fire if only partially charged.
-Rapid Pulse: The Rapid Pulse mode of fire essentially fires the lascannon in a stop, start, stop, start action, allowing it to charge in between each pulse and thus allowing to to be sustained for long periods of time. It fires 2 pulse per second of operation and can be upheld at this rate for five minutes before requiring charge.
The Rapid Pulse can also fire whilst partially charged

Missiles: Along with the lascannons the Trifighter is equipped with six missile rails, three under each wing. These are usually loaded with dual-purpose ordnance that can serve as both air-ground and air-air weapons.
These can be replaced with conventional air-ground or air-air missiles, or even left vacant to keep the weight of the fighter low to match the given situation.
In the Beyond Black universe sentient AI has yet to be created.

Programmed AI has taken a dramatic turn and is able to complete its programmed task with the utmost efficiency; an example of such is the AI employed in the AWS and ALS.
Robotics are mostly used in manufacturing and see little use in the field due to their vulnerability to electronic attack and hacking by enemy forces.
    The Roleplay
OK, so, the history, technology and all that stuff is out of the way for the most part, now its time to put this into work, this next section details what your roles, as players will be.

In the Beyond Black universe's conflict each faction has as black operations unit, everyone knows that the military have those. But now there's a new form of warfare; beyond black warfare.

Essentially beyond black units are units that do not exist. Full stop.

    They have no restrictions.
They are known only to themselves and the faction to which they belong's leader.
There is no friendly side for them. They are the enemy. To their faction and to the other factions.

So, in Beyond Black each roleplayer will be a member of a beyond black unit.

The classes within a beyond black unit are:

    • Rifleman; the all round soldier.
    • Demolitions; self-explanatory.
    • Sniper; the marksman.
    • Scout; the point man.
A basic squad will consist of three riflemen, and one of each other class.

To finish, I'll just say that the weapons, vehicles, classes, etc that I have outline here are as a template for you, use them, or create your own. From them you should be able to discern what sort of limits there are to it.

Here is a template character sheet, all this information is essential, add more as you wish:

    Allegiance: [Choose a faction]
    [Description, fitness levels, etc]
    Equipment: [Weapons and other items]

    Character Sheets:

    Name: General Sergei Nikolov
    Allegiance: Russian Federation
Class: N/A. Nikolov is the Russian president's military advisor and overseer of military actions. He still however has no knowledge of Russia's Beyond Black unit.
    Age: 46
Physical: 6' and of a heavy build, his fitness and strength levels are remarkable from thirty years of fighting under the Federation's flag.
Equipment: Nikolov remains in possession of a .44 Smith & Wesson revolver that has been handed down through his family.
Due to not being out in the field Nikolov wears formal military attire.

    Name: Cpl. Jonathon Ambrose
    Allegiance: Pacific Union
    Class: Scout
Physical: 5'8", skinny, young, lightweight and extremely agile. He practises Parkour which has built him to be perfect for the role of scout.
    Equipment: Being a scout Ambrose only carries a single firearm;
--A SilTec handgun; a handgun designed for incredible accuracy and stealth. It has a small 5 round clip made for use at a slow rate of fire (firing in quick succession will cause dramatic drops in accuracy) but its barrel and firing mechanism allow it to only produce sounds that occur in the sub-human-hearing frequencies making it completely silent for humans but not sound detection security systems.
He has traction enhancing gloves that detect muscle movement and adjust friction accordingly to provide the perfect amount of grip for any situation.
Ambrose wears a RecHUD (Recon Heads Up Display) that allows for 5x digital zoom with minimal distortion and also provides detailed environment and threat analysis information onto the visor. These units are standard amongst Beyond Black scouts.
He also has a pair of switch-blades that incorporate internal laser technology to superheat the leading edge of the blades so as to cut with ease and so that the knife cauterises wounds to stem bleeding.
Along with these are a small line of wire used for strangulation, it cuts the skin and allows toxins to seep into the bloodstream, knocking out the target in a matter of seconds.

    Name: Jacob Tyler
    Allegiance: The Pacific Union
    Class: Sniper/Recon
Physical: Short brown hair, 6ft 1", athletic build, well muscled.
Equipment: Optic Sensor Goggles (OSG's) - Featuring night vision, infrared, thermal vision, a 24x magnification capability and realtime target tracking, these goggles are ideal for Recon units.

Tracking Suite - Small device strapped to the wrist to alert the wearer of any nearby movement as well as disrupting enemy tracking or radar systems.

Wrist Blade - Small, hidden blade strapped about the wrist that can be extended for a quick and stealthy melee kill by neural impulse.

TSR1 - With a mounted laser sight and detachable suppressor for silent shots. Jacob usually carries a single clip of slugs, 3 clips of standard ammunition and a single clip of Ordinance rounds.

Custom made light machine gun called 'Umbra' by Jacob - Features a astoundingly high capacity clip of up to 100 extremely small rounds. 'Umbra' has a very high fire rate and can empty it's clip in under 5 seconds but is mostly ineffectual against any armoured foe and serves primarily for suppressive fire. Due to it's light-weight and compact design, it has very moderate accuracy but offers very little noise.
The weapon has no sights except for a laser sight located on the side of the weapon. It has a comfortable grip and fits snugly against the wielders body. The entire back half of the weapon however is hollow as the large clips are slotted in from the back, loading directly into the small firing chamber.
Jacob took some inspiration for the weapon from an old FN p90 model.
