So different kinds of *cough* porn appeal to different genders?

Ummm... yeah I don't even know why I'm starting this topic, and I hope it's okay. Maybe this was sort of inspired by an article I read somewhere, on top of this bizarre conversation I had with some buddies on yahoo messenger the other night (Don't ask). But basically... well...

Okay here's the thing. I have heard that most of the fanfiction writers out there are girls, or at least quite a few of them are, and that they are the main ones responsible for writing heavy romance in fanfiction, even to the point where characters get... shall we say, heavily intimate. (I think you get what I'm implying).

So anyway... I guess I just wanted to throw this question out there, simply because I'm curious about your opinions (and again, I hope this topic is alright.) But... would you say that, in general, men are more interested in visual intimacy, as I'll call it, while women may be more drawn in by the written version?

    Discuss.

For men, pleasure aside, sex is a way to display power; I've got this woman, I can keep her from others, etc. Think of a beautiful woman and you don't imagine her on the arm of a fat man or a weed. Whereas for women the emotional intimacy of sex, or at least its blackmail potential, seems to be a means to gain control.

Although I doubt either side regularly phrases it in those terms I think different trends in adult entertainment just reflect the different power relationships around the social uses of sex.

What kind of people do you hang around with to get that idea in your head? That's quite a horrific generalisation of an extremely complicated biological and psychological topic.

The sexual interests of each individual are largely based upon experiences of early life. Most peoples sexual desires develop a long time before they themselves are sexually aware or of an age where they have any idea that sex is for anything other than making babies.

Take for instance a male that has a fetish surrounding feet or shoes. Where do you think this desire came from? As a child, this individual was likely almost never picked up by their mother and was left on the floor a lot of the time. So what was the one part of mummy they saw the most and related to a sense of affection or security? Her feet.

Another way that sexual desires can form in this manner, is through embarrassment or deception regarding a particular aspect of sex early in the stages of the learning process. So for example if a young boy asks his mother what a vagina is - and she responds with something like 'it's a sin and you will go to hell;' the chances are that later in life this particular male will be heavily focused on vaginal intercourse. While they will not be consciously aware of this fact, they will be receiving 'feel good' hormones that are usually associated with doing something you shouldn't and the enhanced excitement there in.

I'm not very well versed on the interworking of the hormones relating to why males are more visual when it comes to stimulation than women, so I can't really comment much on that aspect. However in general, women are extremely good at internalising their emotions and thoughts. So for a female, reading a book allows her to create the scene described the way she wants and to create the people involved using her imagination. As a result of generally not being overly visual, women tend to have specific ideas of what the perfect romantic situation is - and so the imagination is a far more powerful tool than visual stimulus.

Yep generally different kinds of porn appeal to different genders to some extent.

Female oriented porn tends to be milder generally less hard (think various red library romance novels) whereas male oriented porn tends to get a lot faster to the action without too much jingo jungo.

As to fanfiction. Keep in mind that most fanfiction authors tend to be female and on top of that they tend to be generally in their earlier teens. More so for fanfiction authors for various manga's, tv series etc (anything with a fixed cast of characters which also appear in the fanfiction).
So throw in early teen hormone rushes with an infatuation with some character...and you get a certain result.

Re: So different kinds of *cough* porn appeal to different genders?

I think Kitty mentioned an important fact there. Most fan-fiction writers are still young. A lot of them are also virgins (not trying to be generalising here, just that those who write fan fiction are usually not busy having sex at 15). Meaning that most of them are looking for romance, cuddle fun, those sort of things and not immediately a good session of sex.

Now, there still are quite a few (men and women) who write erotic-themed literature, or at least add an erotic aspect to their story.
So to answer Crystal's question; yes, maybe girls prefer to read 'porn'. Rather than watch it. It makes things look more perfect, more dreamy, and it's easier to replace the person from the story with yourself. It's also not as direct as watching the actual thing.
I also think the legality has something to do with it. Reading an erotic themed story isn't as shocking as watching actual pornography. And as such, you won't really think you're doing anything "illegal", compared to watching an actual video. Besides, most porn out there is hardcore, not something most girls like to watch.

i had no idea fan-fiction= PORN! LOL!(OK just kidding)
you may have created something new.

i think most of the fan fiction leans more to the "dime romance novel" of yesteryear rather than erotica. although i haven't read that much FF to be sure.

for me anything romantic is the devil to write--maybe i will write a story about a bounty hunter that is in love with his zabrack blaster??--

Romance(even the heavy intimate kind) is not phornograpy nor are erotic novels in my book.

Re: So different kinds of *cough* porn appeal to different genders?

Is there something wrong with the peeps I interact with online? XD

Anyway seriously, there is one fic in particular that me and my chat group on Yahoo messenger were talking about, and I would personally call it pornography in writing. I mean, I'd never seen anything quite so graphic in my life, when it came to, ah, written sexual content, until I read that fic. I'm not going to post the link here, however, because it's very, very, VERY graphic and definitely not suitable for younger readers.

If you're really curious about it though, I suppose you could PM me and I might give you the link. But DON'T say I didn't warn you. You're probably better off not seeing it.

Anyway I am sorry if this subject, or if the way I phrased things in my first post, bothered anyone or offended anyone.

Is it the infamous one where Ginny and one of her friends rape Snape with their fists? I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw that one.

    Well...you got me curious now.

So, you'd say a story about sex and nothing but sex, with a little, cheesy storyline, doesn't count as porn for the readers amongst us?

Drop the bloody innocent routine bub you of all people know what truly qualifies as porn. ;)

Erotic novels are just that. it will just stimulate your imagination...What happens afterward is up to the reader.

I will definitely read that. Funniest thing I've read all day

*mentally imagines a disturbed bounty hunter who is way too attached to his beloved death dealer. He probably gives it a name, maybe 'Natasha' or 'Jasmine.' "Oh baby, did I forget to clean you today? Let me get the lube."*
