The most depressing song I've ever heard is "Streets Of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen. It's a slow, dreary song about a guy with AIDS dying on the streets of Philly. Add that to the fact that the song came out and was big in 1993, the most depressing year of my life-then yeah, it's too sad of a song for me.

I love Country and Western music, but some of the songs are just so depressing. Tammy Wynnette's D.I.V.O.R.C.E is enough to make you want to go out and shoot yourself - I much prefer Billy Connolly's comic version. Then there's Honey, by Bobby Goldsboro. The premise of the song is depressing enough - a young woman dying before her time - but then you learn she was always crying anyway, so she probably drowned in her own tears.

It's not just country music that'e depressing, though. Old Shep by Elvis Presley is another downer - all about a dog getting shot in the head. Then there's Tears in Heaven, written by Eric Clapton following the death of his son.

So many country songs are about people who are down and out. After listening to a sad country song, all of a sudden my life is looking a lot better.

The most depressing song for me, till date has to be Jason Walker's Down. Being a sad song, it has to be slow and emotional, but the lyrics - when he goes "I shot for the sky; I'm stuck on the ground; why do I try? I know I'm gonna fall down!" - kill me a little bit from the inside every time I hear it. :(

Several songs about departed love ones and being regretful type of songs sounds depressing for me. Those songs become depressing for me when a very important person in my life dies and evrything seems to be hard to accept.

I would have to say Mad World sung by Gary Jules takes the cake for me. Not only is it depressing, it's great to listen to. I can't stand the original version from Tears for Fears.

Matchbox Twenty's "Push" from 1996, about a guy beating up a girl, is quite depressing.

But not quite like Springsteins "Streets Of Philadelphia" (to me, anyway).

Nine Inch Nails' Hurt, sung by Johnny Cash is the one that comes to mind for me. Johnny made their song even more depressing by dying shortly after making the recording.

The most depressing song that I've ever listened to is Emeli Sande's Read All About It. It's a very sad love song that describes two people who are forced to be apart. This song is so poignant and melancholic, read the lyrics below and you will know how I feel. I usually relate the song to homosexual couples and feel extremely sad after listening to it.

Well, there are quite a number of depressing songs I've heard in my lifetime:

    - Ludwig von Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

    - Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings

    - Gaetano Donizetti's Una Furtiva Lagrima

    - Benny Goodman's Goodbye

    - Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3 and No. 5

Hope these tunes will be listened by some on this board!

For me it would be Albinoni:

But in my opinion it's not only depressing. It's also sublime - and beyond beautiful. I love listening to it. In a twisted way it makes me happy :cool:8-)

Have you ever heard of Gloomy Sunday by Rezso Seress in 1933?

It's also called The Suicide Song. There is a very dark legend of many suicides connected to it.

I listened to it and I'm still here. I intend to live forever...

...so far, my plan is working! :smug:

It's not more the song, it's the fact that this was the last thing a friend sent me moments before he committed suicide. The message he sent along with it was (paraphrasing), "everything is perfect right now, everything is beautiful"

    Someone Like You by Adele.

"I heard that you're settled down

That you found a girl and you're married now

I heard that your dreams came true

Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you..."

This song is really timeless. It tells a tale of a lost love and how hard it is to move on.

Departure (an OST from the anime Rurouni Kenshin). The song is just an instrumental but every time I hear this song, I remember the last scene from the OVA (The Passing of Time Saga). The main character dies just after he goes home and it feels bittersweet because his wife had been waiting for him for a very long time. TT__TT

I think the most depressiong song is "till the end". It's a song from video game soundtracks. It's actually in two video games. Alundra and Legend of Legaia. And of course, it only played in times of sadness, death, or despair.
