In this article we diving into some of the features of the modern forum product XenForo that you can use to help your community visitors to discover the great content that's published on your site.

So you have stumbled on to a XenForo powered site and you want to know whether to sign up or whether it is beneficial. I have learned that a true site that wants members will have content, not all, but good content open for guest viewing. That is the first thing we will look at in this article.

We will use XenFans as an example. As a guest viewing XenFans, there are 3 links under the 'Forum' tab: 'Search', 'What's New', 'Popular Content'. Looking over the tabs there is 'Products & Services' to explain this page is a list of services XenFans offers and products. Guest viewing on all of the pages listed above is due in part to give a guest a view of what XenFans has to offer. Clicking on 'Search' will open a page that allows guests to search all open forums, or nodes for XenForo, to guests. This makes things simple right? Well if you want to make a reply then that just shows you as the guest are interested in the content so might as well sign up and participate.

Ok click on 'What's New', this loads a page that has a list of active topics open for guest viewing from all open forums that guests can view. The topics listed can be viewed by guests otherwise they would not be listed. Same thing for the search page when searching for a specific topic. Not only do you get a list of topics, you are able to see the latest reply and when that reply was posted. Good way of showing how active the forum is when viewing as a guest.

Now we move on to clicking 'Popular Content' which loads a page that is very unique. It has various boxes that displays 'Posts with most likes', 'Most Viewed Threads', 'Threads with most replies', and 'Top Users'. This page is a custom add-on which you can download {input link to XenFans download and XenForo community if available otherwise leave as XenFans}. This page has some great features and really is useful when wanting to attract members through content previewing.

Now if that wasn't enough for you to sign up, consider the things that are visible to a guest. Look through the content even if you didn't find anything that interests you. There is always good content hidden beneath pages of other threads.

The following is a list of XenFans links that have small descriptions for each link and what is seen in parentheses is the tab each link is under.
  • What's New - http://xenfans.com/find-new/threads(Tab: Forum)
    • Displays new content since your last visit, including items you aren't watching
  • Recent Threads - http://xenfans.com/find-new/threads?recent=1(Empty whatsnew result page)
    • These are all threads from the community that have been recently updated. You may also see what members have been doing recently.
  • Watched Threads - http://xenfans.com/watched/threads(Tab: Forum)
    • Displays new content since your last visit, filtered to threads you've marked as watching (how can you watch a thread? can i have a preference for this?)
  • Popular Content - http://xenfans.com/popular/(add-on! + link to it)
    • Displays an overview of content that has the most replies, views, etc.
  • Your Personal News Feed - http://xenfans.com/account/news-feed(Tab: Your Profile)
    • Activity stream for all the users that you follow (who do I follow, how do i follow someone, and how to manage those who i follow?)
  • Recent Activity - http://xenfans.com/recent-activity/(Tab: members)
    • Activity stream for all registered members
  • Latest Alerts - http://xenfans.com/account/alerts(Tab: Alerts)
    • Overview of content that received quotes, mentions, alerts, or other types of alerts, such as profile comments, etc.
Now keep in mind that not all features listed above can be accessed by guests so we will now discuss features as a member. The same applies as a guest except for a few differences. If you click on 'What's New' and you have read everything or there is no new content since your last visit. You are presented with a new box that has some interesting links.

I'll show a small list of what is listed there.
Not only can you visit the links but there are a few more above these that introduce you to the social side of XenForo as well as. XenForo is not only a forum but its a place to share thoughts, ideas, sorrow, and even despaire. XenForo is used for many genre's on the internet so don't despair, there is something out there for you.

The benefit of becoming a member of any community is content, friendships, and knowledge. I hope this article was beneficial to those reading it.
