Change Nodetype "Category" to "Forum"

As ex-vBulletin users, we didn't realize that it's not possible to change a Category to a Forum once you created it

Now we have a big chaos in our board because we have categories instead of forums.
Anybody had the same problem and fixed this?
If yes, would you share your query for this?

I've simply made a new forum, deleted the category? .. or do you have orphan threads under the "vb" category?
