Computer virus infections and anti-virus systems have been in a decade-long struggle in an attempt to gain dominance over the other. Whether the unwanted programs take the form of trojans, viruses, or worms, they can have a detrimental impact on your computer or even have a negative effect on your life by accessing or manipulating personal information. Although installing the anti-virus and firewall programs is a viable form of protection, the best method of dealing with the infections is to prevent them in the first place.

The infection ultimately begins at some source where it must gain access to the machine. The best way to not suffer the consequences of viruses and malware is not to allow them to have access. Unfortunately, they often employ methods which the regular computer user might not expect. For example, oftentimes viruses or malware are disguised as other programs or files which the user may intend on installing. Emails often have links sent from “friends” who want them to see a picture or video. Simply opening the file gives the hidden virus permission to invade.

Downloads off the internet are also a hazard since virtually any file can now be hosted online and downloaded by anyone. The makers of viruses upload programs that are hidden viruses (oftentimes, ironically, as anti-virus or malware removers) and spread them to the public. The best way to prevent infections is to confirm the source of any file before granting it any forms of permission.

By sticking to secure mediums of communication and use, the chances of opening a virus inside your computer are significantly decreased. Remember, all viruses must gain access somehow, so prevent viruses and malware by checking all files first.

Even on the Mac now there are ransomware and malware going around - thankfully Apple is quite on top of it.
The scary part is that legit programs their mirrors or builds get compromised, and you start an app you purposely paid for and download legit, and boom, possible infection.

Scary world out there these days.
