Here's my article so far, it's pretty basic at the moment, but I'd like some more feedback as soon as possible really.
Preventing Forum Spam
When running a community, spam is something your bound to come across. For those of you who are just starting a community and not sure what spam exactly is, you can find more information on it here.
There are a few ways to stop your community getting overloaded with spam.
2. Bots have become more and more advanced over the years some can now read the Captcha image. So it’s best to use the question and answer option. Try not to make the questions too easy. Questions like 'what is 1+1' are too easy. Choose harder questions like 'if you have a dozen apples and eat 3, how many are there left. (Admin > Options > User Registration)
3. Stop Forum Spam:
Stop Forum Spam is a wonderful little XenbForo product that will check against the IP and email addresses, and therefore If the registration failed, the data is not sent to the database, the user would just get an on screen error.
Since adding the Stop Forum Spam product, I have definitely noticed a decrease in spammers, but there are still a few that can get through the net, but it’s certainly a good idea to install it. It will require you to create an account over on stopforumspam.com, as you’ll need an API code to connect it to your site.
