Every board is unique, so apply the tip to your liking. But .. Do not forget that a great deal of your traffic comes from guests, either real humans who are (yet) logged in, or robots. We're going to ignore the latter for now (but you shouldn't - this is not about seo, so that is why).
Guests are visitors to your site, either from direct traffic, links from other sites, or via search results. They're equally important and they're a consideration away from becoming a registered member. Perhaps even a step away from becoming a regular member or even a customer.
Do not forget about your visitors. They are important and a gateway to your successful content. Catch their attention, inform them about what your site is about, and provoke them to stick around and read, register and participate (without spamming them).
A friendly face, an uncluttered interface, and spam-free experience might just do the trick. Besides having great content.
Log out - it's that simple.
Log out of your account, clear your cookies and try Chrome, Safari and a few other browsers. And try finding your site in search engines, go there directly. Or perhaps go to a partner site where you're linked and pretend to have expectations from coming in from these various angles - from various experiences - and try to match the experience, write down first impressions.
Next : Ask a family member that's not tech savvy, or a friend that is. And get their first impressions.
Compare your impressions against yours and work on the overlaying points.
"I have no clue what this site is about" will be in the top 3. And something 85% of the guests will experience and board admins have a problem with.
You could consider this add-on http://xenfans.com/threads/product-xenfans-com-welcome-block-add-on.730/
