It is important to communicate clearly with your audience what their options are, this includes making it clear that the discussion has run its course and they can no longer participate.

XenForo might do this differently than other board software - but how do you do it on yours? Maybe customize it? Share your tips - I suggest to consider a warning box on the error page that explains in a user-friendly manner why ..

When I find a thread that has run it's course, or has content in it that I deem not suitable, I reply to the thread and give a clear reason for why the thread has been closed. I do it politely. I therefore warn the member by PM :) A warning box would be nice in the popup overlay though :)
