Should I just pay money every month to square space to have my site online and have them deal with the flood attacks and hack attacks, or are there basic things I can do myself like pick a specific provider for my host or maybe pay extra for anti dos attack?

One basic thing to do is get a hosting provider with proper DDoS protection, perhaps put your site behind CloudFlare, and have some basic firewall settings like dropping incoming icmp, and fragmented packets.
