How long does it usually take for the server to be "up to date"?

I know it takes a lot to fix plugins/add-ons and redo old areas, build up new ones, etc. but I am curious if there is a general timeframe in which it takes to catch up to the current version of the game. I know more complex servers with more features typically stay behind for a while and I understand that completely.

Hi there, this is a great question.

Technically if a server has no plugins, and it's just a vanilla setup. The world converts between releases. Mojang also has a startup flag for servers to force upgrade chunks from old to new versions and there's ways to optimize the world and remove caches and fix lighting issues.

On top of that, special server software like Spigot and Paper, Tuinity and Airplane offer additional server management features. And especially the ability to add hooks into the server for plugins to use. This API allows for additional features, including world generators. And that's why it can get complicated.

A plugin for version 1.16 might have to upgrade to 1.17 to support newer java versions, as well as the updates to the API.

Once that's done, a server can start, anything that needs to get converted will, and then players can join again.

The size of the worlds and the complexity of these plugins are mainly the cause for delay in updates.

Servers that restart, they might have groups/ranks/roles to consider, things that inherit between seasons as they call it. It's not something we do. We never throw away worlds. (temporary resource worlds however get reset).

We don't have to rebuild things thankfully in the world. Players on 1MoreBlock.com keep their inventories, groups, ranks, roles, perks, builds, etc.
